Play PhilosophyWe focus on play.

We believe that all children need play in their lives as much as they need to eat and breathe. Play supports the development of our children into balanced adults who can work and play well together. Child-directed play is even better in helping children develop creatively and socially at a better pace for them.

What is Play?

Play is a fun, enjoyable activity that elevates our spirits and brightens our outlook on life. It expands self-expression, self-knowledge, self-actualization and self-efficacy. Play relieves feelings of stress and boredom, connects us to people in a positive way, stimulates creative thinking and exploration, regulates our emotions, and boosts our ego” (Garry Landreth, 2002).

At any age, play acts to retain and enhance meaningful context, and optimizes the learning process.” The National Institute for Play, USA (2006)
Leading expert on play, Dr. Stuart Brown, gave a talk at Serious Play ’08 that can be viewed on the TED network. It’s 26 minutes long but interesting.

What is Child-directed Play?

Play that is self directed by children in a safe and nurturing environment free of adult leading, judgment, influence or interpretation. Adults are there to encourage child development through coaching and modeling without being too overbearing. – definition adapted from The Play Team and The Incredible Years curriculum.

Why is Play important?

According to the 2007 study, “The Importance of Play in Promoting Healthy Child Development and Maintaining Strong Parent-Child Bonds” by the American Academy of Pediatrics
“Play is essential to development because it contributes to the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being of children and youth.”

Also from Carolyn Webster-Stratton’s Incredible Years program – “Play is an opportunity for children to learn who they are, what they can do, and how to relate to the world around them. Through play, children are able to discover and explore, use their imagination, solve problems, and test out new ideas. Through these experiences, children gradually learn how to gain self-control over their environment, and they become more competent and self-confident.”
